A 10 Hectare McBride Bay site is to be developed as a shellfish farm and as a local Tahsis Cooperative. The Village of Tahsis is currently preparing a detailed implementation business Aquaculture Farmplan that will address the financial, management and employment issues. More public information meetings to bring the cooperative opportunity to the community will be held in the near future.

Four additional shellfish sites in the Nootka Sound have been applied for by the Village, with the intention of providing other entrepreneurial and joint venture opportunities.

All four sites are within an hour’s commute by water from Tahsis. In the future, the Village would be receptive to seing a processing plant within the Village. For further information contact the Village of Tahsis.

The Co-op was founded in 2003 and has been researching the local supply and the market for Salal, mushrooms & berries, ferns, Christmas boughs, pine cones, devil’s club and other herbs, forest food products and floral greenery. The Tahsis Agri Forestry Co-op has an agreement with Western Forest Products Inc. that the Co-op may do cuttings on lands before the timber harvesting. The Co-op is working towards establishing an Agri Forestry buying station in Tahsis for local pickers, and to ship product to market. Any local resident may join the Co-op, work with their harvesting plan and sell their products to the buying station when open for operation.

Cedar at the Industrial Site in Tahsis, west coast of Vancouver Island There are currently seven industrial tenants at the Industrial Site, and there is additional room for interested parties. The site is supplied with 3-phase power from the BC Hydro substation that supplies the Tahsis community. The site has water, a scow grid for barge access, a small wharf, and a small log sort. The site is adjacent to deep sea access, a deep sea port, and a Heliport.

There is a sewer hookup at the entrance, and some sewer lines within the site that would require maintenance and the addition of a lift station to be able to service the industrial site. The site is paved and Hydro Substation in Tahsis, BCfenced. License agreements are available from Western Forest Products Inc.. Agreements are for a one-year period, renewable annually.

Small operators in the industrial site do some log sorting, and a larger dry land sort is located 3 miles south in West Tahsis. To contract for use of this log sort, contact Western Forest Products Inc..

Transportation Services
Tahsis is serviced by Canada Post and Purolator, and several small hauling operators.. There are no public transportation services to move people between Tahsis, Campbell River and the Comox Valley, or within Tahsis. However, services are available from the Campbell River Limosine Service, and some local lodges have pickup services.

Many Tahsis businesses, including the Fishing Charter services, Marinas, Hotels, B&Bs and Motels, would be supportive of a new transport company that would offer passenger service between Tahsis, Gold River, Campbell River and Comox, as well as in-town taxi services and delivery services.

There is potential for a viable pick-up/delivery service in and out of Tahsis, Campbell River and Comox. For information on the requirements to provide this service, see the BC Passenger Transportation Board.

Tahsis has a safe, quiet community with many households interested in offering Home Stay experiences for foreign students. The local school, Captain Meares Elementary Secondary School, offers a low ratio of teachers to students, excellent facilities with High Speed Internet Access, all in a remote natural setting.

CMESS and School District 84 are receptive to hosting a program for International Students, and would be willing to work with an independent operator interested in setting up such a program as a business. Interested parties may contact CMESS.
